Absent Presence / Protective Presence

Protective Presence operates in the areas of the Jordan Valley and the South Hebron Hills, struggling alongside Palestinians over grazing and agricultural lands, against house demolitions, and for the possibility of living in the face of institutional and independent forces acting against them. Protective Presence is an activist practice, carried out mainly by Jewish Israelis and international civilians, who stand alongside Palestinians in struggle and increase the visibility of both the people and their actions.
The performance brings together the Palestinian actor living and working in Israel, Murad Hassan, with the experience of protective presence. Through an encounter with Itamar Shapira, Murad performs simulations and dialogues based on testimonies from activists in the region. The work enacts the shedding and obscuring of transparent yet deeply felt privileges that exist in the local space here, between the river and the sea.
Featuring: Murad Hassan, Itamar Shapira, and Thalia Hoffman
