Yael Kanarek will talk about her work with languages and clock-based software. Both are aesthetically driven by structures of loops and repetitions.
Her interest in the territorial and spiritual properties of languages is the subject of her upcoming exhibition, Melancholy, at Nelly Aman gallery, Tel Aviv opening September 10. The works, created during a two-year fellowship at Eyebeam (New York) are made from words and phrases burnt out of rubber using a laser cutter as a writing machine. Multiple languages are then constructed one of four structures: grid, organic, body and mass to form relationships. In her most recent works in the series, she reinterprets works by Malevich and Mondrian, giving the compositions a territorial reading.
During the second part of her talk, she will introduce her new project, Videoclocks, developed with Shawn Lawson. Videoclocks is a computational video software that controls moving image in synch with the computer’s clock. This system of loops and repetitions often results in a meditative, ambient work.

Yael Kanarek has been working in the field of new media is 1995. She’s the recipient of many grants, among them the Rockefeller Media Fellowship. She exhibited at the Whitney Biennial, SFMOMA, and currently her work is the central work of the exhibition at the National Museum for Contemporary Art in Athens, Greece.Kanarek is the founder of Upgrade! International.
