Description

Every poem in That the World is Sudden is a verse: it says one thing and immediately stops. The stopping is the poetic action of the book, alongside the words written within it. The pause asks the readers to halt their activities and allow each verse to stand before them and speak. This is a book that tugs at our ears, that places us in the middle of everyday life; a book not meant to be read, but to be worked with.

Most of the poems in the book say simple things. “That which is hidden in our lives, we have stored in a sack.” Perhaps the world would come closer to repair if each person reflected once a day on this forgotten fact, tried to remember that they are a fetus, a kind of human fish, and wondered about the gap between floating and their actions in the present.

And one can also walk down the street and notice: “That there is a drifting boat between one person and another.” Tens of thousands of people, tens of thousands of boats. This book is one of them. And every person is a harbor.
