Description

The Figure of the Missing is an essay in images written as a mockument (fictional document). The narrator, Adolf Eichmann, lives in Israel in 1987, in one of the northern settlements. The text is constructed of fragments of memory: primarily those drawn from art history, but also from the history of literature and cinema. These are presented as possible identities for the identity that history demanded.

However, the true narrator, as can be seen from the beginning of the text, is a woman: herself the central “missing” figure in history. The relationship between the two narrators is sexual: two survivors clinging to each other’s words and images, failing to reflect one another, devoid of history of their own.
