\u201cI search for forms, invent a tactile history. Not having been raised on any formal-sculptural\u00a0tradition, my interest is in the story of the play, in the piece of Shakespearean theater. I\u00a0have been invited, without the hosts\u2019 knowledge, to document and preserve some of the\u00a0characters who make up the theater of William Shakespeare.\u201d\u00a0Yeshayahu Rabinowitz sculpts characters\u2019 memories through their body parts and\u00a0accessories. He does this through an interpretive process, like an archeologist preserving\u00a0the gestures, motions and life story of a fictional character, who is, in turn, based on an\u00a0historical figure. The sculptor recounts the story of the play through the material trappings\u00a0of its protagonists \u2013 clothing, accessories, and objects that preserve some of the\u00a0movements of their lives. He sews the King\u2019s formerly magnificent robe, now a mess of rags\u00a0cloaking a fool who is neither man nor woman. Julius Caesar is adorned with body armor, a\u00a0dented chest guard, a battle- and time-worn uniform.\u00a0Rabinowitz explores the archeology of the theatrical space. Looking for evidence, material\u00a0testimonies, tactile impressions. He creates the findings that tell the story that happened\u00a0after the characters have left the stage. The findings tell about the moments of the Fall.\u00a0Rabinowitz captures the character mid-Fall, at the moment at which the character loses his\u00a0stability and hold on the ground: \u201cThe body grudgingly relinquishes its measured, aesthetic\u00a0movement and transforms into a vulnerable, powerless form,\u201d he says. And here,\u00a0paradoxically, in the fragility and vulnerability of the sculpture, lies the disturbing power of\u00a0the single, distinct object. In the memory of the movement lingers the memory of the\u00a0drama, the personal life story that is woven into the story of a collective war. The story of\u00a0the character and that of the sculpture are created through sewing, sculpting, gluing, and\u00a0painting. The story of Rabinowitz the sculptor meshes into the story of the character. He\u00a0converses with it, entering the character itself and its narrative and sculptural tradition,\u00a0describing, interpreting, and inventing them.\u00a0The site-specific context of Rabinowitz\u2019s exhibition is the Mamuta Art & Media Center,\u00a0inhabiting the cellars of the former leper\u2019s hospital. These spaces are part of the artistic\u00a0text, and as such they render the installation a one-off interpretation of Rabinowitz\u2019s work.\u00a0The body and its accessories are key concepts in the history of the leper\u2019s hospital. The\u00a0imperfect body, the accessories of those \u201cdeviant\u201d protagonists, which challenge our\u00a0perception of the heroic protagonist, also characterize Rabinowitz\u2019s work. The accessories\u00a0displayed in the exhibition undermine society\u2019s very concept of the hero. The former leper\u2019s\u00a0hospital \u2013 a place that inhabits the Other, the excluded, the vulnerable, the leper, the artist,\u00a0the hero \u2013 is the space that hosts Rabinowitz\u2019s works and his studio. The space shapes the\u00a0reading and the interpretation of its works.<\/p>\n

Yeshaiahu Rabinowitz, born 1975 in Jerusalem. He is an art teacher and a housefather. Graduated the fine art department of Shenkar and studied professional sewing. Costume and object designer for dance. Guest artist in Mamuta in the past two years.<\/p>\n
